On the anniversary of his birth, we celebrate the life of Maestro Claudio Abbado (1933-2014), one of the most beloved conductors of his generation. In 1963, Abbado entered the Dimitri Mitropoulos Memorial International Competition for young conductors, jointly supported by the New York Philharmonic and Leonard Bernstein’s own foundation.
